Competitors in Foxcroft’s "Be Green" 阀杆 Challenge Tackle Climate Change Mitigation

Foxcroft team takes third in the high school division.

Bullis School and Edlin School each claimed the top prize in their respective high school and middle school divisions during Foxcroft’s 12th annual 阀杆 Challenge last Saturday.

Designed for middle and high school students, the competition saw 109 girls from 14 schools in Virginia, 马里兰, 和华盛顿, DC, 运用他们的科学知识, 技术, 工程, and math to take on issues like sea level rise, 传粉者的栖息地, 回收, and more as they participated in challenges revolving around this year’s “Be Green” theme.
Bullis School's Solar Superstars team from Potomac, MD, comprised of Jiselle J.维多利亚·D.,以及维多利亚·M., received a solar-powered robot kit and unique medals designed and fabricated by Foxcroft 阀杆 students using the laser cutter in The Innovation Lab as their first place prize in the high school division. Second place in the high school division went to the Terrific Turbines (Meira B.艾米丽·C.亚历山德拉·F.,茱莉亚A.) from Wakefield School in The Plains, VA. 威尼斯彩票游戏的回收摇滚明星(Ryleigh B. 23, Sneha K. 23年,卡梅隆·H. 23年,伊安娜·W. 24)获得第三名.

In the middle school division, the Super SuperNovas (Lyla H.Varsha A.玛雅·S.,安雅C.) from Edlin School in Reston, VA, took home the middle school trophy. Second place went to the Composting Crusaders (Gracie J.凯瑟琳·R.,以及Samantha D.),来自马里兰州贝塞斯达的诺伍德学校. Taking home third were the Sustainable Sirens (Amel J.艾娃·J.凤凰城.苏珊娜·H.) from Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, MD.

Energy and enthusiasm filled Foxcroft’s Athletic/Student Center and Schoolhouse science labs as the teams worked through five unique challenges.

In the Chemistry Lab at the “Turning the Tide on Sea Level Rise” challenge, competitors investigated the cause of sea level rise in two mini-experiments. They analyzed data on sea level rise temporally (in time) and geographically (in space). 最后, the competitors observed the impact of sea level rise on different types of shorelines and engineered their own shorelines based on their observations. 在布里格斯生物实验室, “Pollinator Paradise” had teams imagine a world where Milkweed was extinct and then construct an ideal alternative for pollinators.

回来 in the Athletic/Student Center at the “It’s Not Easy Being Green” event, students had to harness the power of the wind to complete two tasks. 第一个, they had to build a wind turbine to power a light that would alert the scientific community of the dangers of climate change. Next, they had to create a vehicle that could travel using wind power. These "sail cars" raced across the floor of the Dance Studio, and the winner was the team whose car traveled the furthest. In the math-coding challenge “Recycling Robots,” participants programmed a human robot to navigate a maze and collect eco-friendly materials while avoiding non-recyclables! Teams were exposed to algorithmic thinking and collaborative coding to write the most efficient program and find the optimal routes for their human robots.

每一年, 活动赞助商史赛克公司 brings several of their female engineers to not only administer one of the challenges but also to share their experiences and answer questions from the young competitors during a career panel. 史崔克团队的工程挑战, “放下它,就像它很热一样。,” involved students evaluating blueprints of a device that separated cans and bottles.

之间的挑战, students used Kindle Fires supplied by Foxcroft to answer questions about climate change and earn raffle tickets for prizes ranging from gift cards to tech devices. Participants in the middle school competition also took tours of campus and learned a little more about Foxcroft’s focus on girls in 阀杆 during a session with Head of School Cathy McGehee.

女童阀杆教育的领导者, Foxcroft offers an innovative curriculum that addresses challenges facing tomorrow’s workforce and provides relevant and stimulating learning experiences. 学校的招牌项目, the 阀杆 initiative emphasizes inquiry-based labs, 自信自如地使用技术, and hands-on problem-solving that extends well beyond the classroom.
